The Weber Story It all began in 1952, when George Stephen transformed a metal buoy into the world’s first Weber Kettle, introducing a new way to barbecue with a lid and greater control over the cooking process. That simple idea would go on to change outdoor cooking around the world. Weber Barbecues ANZ Weber’s Australian story began in Adelaide in 1978, when Ross McDonald introduced the Weber Kettle to Australia. At a time when Aussies were used to cooking on open, flat barbecues, Ross demonstrated the benefits of cooking with the lid down, often cooking for customers and showing them firsthand what a Weber could do. By the mid-1980s, the Kettle had become a familiar sight in Australian backyards.
